Nicole's Story: Neon to my Beige
Trying to write about yourself is not easy…. and I have no idea where to start! I guess the easiest way for me to tell you guys who I am is to start from the moment I graduated college.
When I graduated from San Diego State in 2010, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my new degree. I worked in restaurants and hotels majority of my adult life - either as a hostess, server, or catering coordinator. I knew it was time for a change, so I took the plunge and got an entry level job for a company that was just starting to spread its wings. I started as a receptionist, answering phones for the first year and a half - which grew extremely boring and depressing three short months into the job. But, despite my frustration, I stuck it out for a little longer - and they finally promoted me to a Marketing Coordinator, which I now thoroughly enjoy! Yes, I actually like my job, it’s weird to admit. There’s a lot to do, and at times it’s overwhelming, but overall it’s a good gig that allows me to be creative.
Even though I am satisfied with my career as of now, I still feel a little drab at times. Working a corporate job 8 hours a day kind of takes the spontaneity out of life. I fell into a routine, and life started to become monotonous - I’d wake up, walk my dog, get ready for work, get in my car, sit in traffic, get to work and stay there for 8-9 hours a day, drive home, take my dog to the park, make myself dinner, watch some TV then go to sleep and repeat it all again the next day. When the weekends came around I’d find myself wanting to go on every adventure possible, but I had no time during the week to accomplish my errands, so my weekends usually consisted of one night going out and the rest of the time cleaning, doing laundry, going grocery shopping, and all that boring adult life stuff. I felt a change was needed, so I started collaborating with Sugi and Emily on NeonBeige - and it all came together and just felt right.
This blog is my outlet - it is my reason to go on an adventure and explore the world around me. I have always enjoyed writing. I have always enjoyed reading people’s stories on life and learning from others’ experiences. This blog will be the Neon to my Beige, and I cannot wait to see what doors this new adventure will open.
